Biography

Patrick Gately was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

Patrick Gately was one of 9 persons involved in the Roscommon Assizes trial on 2 March 1820; Newspaper heading referring to the 9 titled - "The Ribbonmen" due to the green ribbon worn on their lapel symbolising their anti-orange stance. On trial were Matthew Mannion, Patrick Gately, Bryan Hardiman, Thomas Maguire, Thomas Bryan, Michael Costello, John White, Patrick Mullagy and Patrick Rochford. All were found guilty with Mannion sentenced capitally and the other eight transported.

Patrick was transported to Port Jackson (Sydney) in 1821 on the John Barry 2 for 14 years. Government records have him on a list of prisoners assigned (1822), runaway from Bathurst (1823) still assigned at Bathurst (1824) moved to Port Macquarie per Sally (1824). Port Macquarie was a harsh secondary penal colony to which repeat offenders were sent in an attempt to deter future offences. He obtained his Certificate of Freedom 20 Oct 1834 (CFNo. 34/1414) and his Convict Pardon 3 Jul 1846 (Pardon No. 46/009)

Patrick married Mary Clougher at St Patricks Catholic Church Parramatta (1837) and in 1839 Catherine was born at Brisbane Water, Bridget - Parramatta, Patrick Jr & John - Sydney, Brian & Martin - Yass. Family stories claim that he was a bushranger and Patrick, Mary and John Gately all have their names on Deposition Registers for trial at Yass, Goulburn and Gundagai.

Apart from his bushranging, Patrick farmed at Gadana - Adelong and is buried (1876) at Tumut Pioneer Cemetery (unmarked grave) with Mary's death being registered in Adelong 1901.

Research Notes

Profile previously stated: Their youngest son Bernard Martin married Sarah Durack, winner of a gold medal at 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. This was actually a different Bernard Martin Gately
