Biography

England's official policy for decades beginning with the establishment of the overseas colonies, was to collect vagrants and young people off the streets of London and ship them off to the plantations. Many of the unwilling youths were held at Bridewell, and a significant amount of records were preserved from that place.[1] Willing volunteers were also encouraged to go.

At the age of 18, Joan Jobe was likely one of these. Even of age, her circumstances were meager enough that transport seemed the best option, and she signed on to go. Joan Jobe is listed as 18 years old on the list of passengers bound for Virginia aboard the America verified by certificate of the minister at Gravesend.[2]

Based on children's age and other information the birth date of 1617 has led to questions. It is possible she was 18. Alternatively, she didn't actually know her age and guessed; or perhaps she gave a false age. The ages of the children lead to the question. As always, the math has to work.

Gater should read Gather or modern day Gaither.

At the Quarter Court held 6 October 1648 William Berkeley Governor &c granting administration on the estate of John Yates, who died intestate, unto Joan Yates the widow and relict according to order of Lower Norfolk Court dated 20 August 1648 Given at James Cittie 31 August 1648.[3] Joane's will abstract has a number of unresolved gleanings in it:

Research Notes

Joane mentions land adjoining her grandfather's land in the merke(neck) called [Bay Tree Hole]. The location is six miles up the South Branch of the Elizabeth River.
Who is her grandfather? It was originally patented to William Durford, so this must be her grandfather, if the wording is correct.
If she is the granddaughter of Durford, then her mother would have to be at least 14 years older than her. Alternatively, whomever owned the land at the time of this will was her grandfather. Durford died in 1646.
Grandaughter Mary ffowshaw indicates a daughter that married a ffowshaw (Note: one Mary Fanshaw is aged 21 in 1669. [5]

Why does it say Jobe? Shouldn’t it be Gaither?

The actual ship's manifest lists her as Jone Jobe age 18. There were Gaither's that shipped out the next week for Virginia, and perhaps there is a connection, but her name was Jobe. Check Coldham and/or Hotten.

Gater is apparently the best spelling the clerk could do for Gather or Gaither.
