Biography

Born in late 1839 in Staffordshire. In the 1851 census, Anne was 11 years old, living with her father Joseph, mother Maria. She was the second of seven children (Elizabeth, Anne, Arthur, Frederick, William, Maria, Joseph) in the house at that time, all children had been born in Burslem. Her father was listed on the census form as a Packer, her mother a housekeeper, and her eldest sister, Elizabeth 13 years old was working as a burnisher. Anne was noted as being "at home". Perhaps she was kept house and looked after the younger children, since her mother was listed as working as a Housekeeper. Anne Gater married Joshua Blackhurst on 6 December 1870. Marriage information lists her father as Joseph Gater ,with his profession as "Grocer", though census data lists his occupation as packer or glass packer. Neither Anne nor Joshua had been married before. Anne was seven years older than Joshua. Witnesses at their marriage were William Gater and Betsey Blackhurst. All were literate. Anne and Joshua's residence at the time was listed as Beadwell Wood. In the 1871 Census, they were living in Wharf Street, Burslem, Stoke on Trent. Anne would have been pregnant with twins Abraham and Anne at the time. She died on 18 September, presumably as a result of complications from the twin's birth. Abraham died just twelve days later, and Anne died at four .
