Samuel Gates was born in 1760, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Gates.
In 1780, at age 19, Samuel entered military service and spent six months in Capt. Michael G. Houdin's Co., Col Rufus Putnam's (5th) Regiment.
In 1781, he married Lucretia Williams.
Samuel and his wife Lucretia lived in Lunenberg, Vermont in 1850, apparently in the household of his son Samuel. The household consisted of:
