Biography

Born 8 Aug 1718 in Marlborough, the son of Simon and Sarah (Woods) Gates.[1] Married Damaris Howe on 29 Jan 1743. They lived in Bolton, Marlborough, and Rutland. He was a prominent man in Rutland and was a captain of the militia there. They had 10 children. He died 5 Oct 1773. She died 3 Dec 1809.[2]

Gates-4626 and Gates-175 appear to represent the same person because: Clearly the same person despite the difference in birth date. The Marlborough birth in 1718 is correct and documented in Vital Records.

Gates-175 and Gates-4626 are not ready to be merged because: Stephen Gates-175 was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts in 1718. He married Damaris Howe in 1743. He certainly was not born in Worcester in 1735. The question is whether there was another Stephen Gates born in Worcester County in 1735, who was mistakenly paired with Damaris Howe.

The Stephen Gates that married Damaris Howe was burn in Marlborough in 1718. There may be other Stephen Gates born in Worcester County, not necessarily the city if Worcester. Stephen and Damaris had a son Stephen Gates born in Rutland, Worcester, Massachusetts in 1745.
