She passed away after 1839. "among my eight children, to wit: Elizabeth Thompson, Ellie Hill, William R. Couthren, Martin Couthran, Pleasant Couthren, Milly Whiteman, Matilda McCullough, Tabitha Lord"
Jane Gates’s Will was recorded July 1839, in Court Minutes Vol. 1, 1836-1841 in Coffee County, TN. It lists her eight children. She spelled the last name various ways: Elizabeth Thompson, Ebi Hill, William R. Corthren, Martin Couthran, Pleasant Cauthran, Milly Whiteman, Mathilde McCulliugh and Felisha Laird. Further investigation shows Ebi married to an Eli Hill. Martin Bird Cawthon married Nancy Elliot. Milly (Emily) married James Whittemore, Felisha (also known as Tabitha) was probably married to a Lord rather than Laird as there were several Lords mentioned in tax and land records in the area. [1]
Jane was born after 1775. She passed away in 1839.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jane by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jane:
Again, Phebe Blankenship, daughter of Hudson and Edith Wilkinson Blankenship, married Lemuel Colbert in 1790 in Campbell County, Virginia. Lemuel disappeared between 1815-1816, presumably he died. In 1820, Phebe Colbert is listed as Head of Household in the 1820 Pittsylvania County, Virginia census. She was a Blankenship when she married Lemuel, and she was a Colbert when she died in 1865. Therefore, please remove Gates from her profile. Phebe, born 1765 in what is now Campbell County Virginia, but then was Bedford County, as it was not cut from Bedford until 1782. She married in then Campbell County, Virginia in 1790. They moved to Pittsylvania County Virginia- about 5 miles away, where she lived until her death. She did not marry a Gates. There is no room i her timeline for a previous husband, and her marriage license is clearly Blankenship, not Gates, not widow. This is not to say there were not other PHebe Blankenship's, but the one who married Lemuel Colbert did not marry in GA or have children there. Thanks. Karen
I believe there are two Lemuel Colbert's, One of who may be Jane's father and the other, in Virginia, who married Phebe Blankenship (Campbell Co mariages through 1850 in Wade Hinshaw's Enclycopedia of Quaker Genealogy Vol. 6 Appendix (not all were Quaker marriages but all marrages recorded in Campbell Co are listed). I have a copy of the marriage bond for Lemuel Colbert and Phebe Blankenship from Campbell County Virginia from the Clerk of Court, Rustburg VA. Phebe was widowed by 1816 and thereafter, until her death after the 1860 census of Pittsylvania Co Virginia, she remained Phebe Colbert, so she did not remarry. She was 25 when married, but listed as Blakenship, not Gates??
