Guy was born about 1885, the son of Edward Gates and Maude Scott. In 1895, their family lived in Leavenworth, Kansas where his father worked as a teamster.[1]
In 1900, their family lived in Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland and his father was a merchant; the Gates household was made up of: Edward (44), Maud Gates (44) and their children, Edward (21), Rosco (19), Guy (14), Pansy (12), Maud (6), and Lattistra (Lettitia) (4) and visitor, Bettie Johnson (35).[2]
By 1910, their family had moved to Frankfort, Mineral, West Virginia and were living on their own farm; their household was made up of: Edward (52) and Maud (53), their sons, Edward L (31) and Gus (Guy) (24), Edward's wife, Gertrude Gates (30), and Edward and Gertrude's children, Edward E (6), Lawrence J (3), Elmon (Elmore) (1), and James (0).[3]
He married Mayme Elizabeth Johnson in 1914.[4] In 1920, Guy (34), Mayme (34) and their daughter, Harriet (4) were living with her mother, Hattie Johnson (63) in
Somerset, Pennsylvania where Guy worked as a railroad "hostler".[5][6]
He passed away about 1926.
