Job Elliott Gates was born on 6 December 1854 at Shilbottle, Northumberland, England, the son of Elizabeth Gates and William Gates.^{[1][2][3][4][5][6]}

He was a coal miner.^[2][3]

He married Hannah Armstrong in 1877.^[7] Their children were:
