Joel Gates was born on 9 May 1788, in Dummerston, Windham, Vermont.[1] He was the son of Lieut. Daniel Gates and Sarah Moore.

Joel married Susan Dutton [2] on 06 Mar 1828, in Dummerston, Vermont.[3][4] Together, Joel and Susan had two children.
