Biography

Margaret Davis aka Margaret Gates was born in 1839 in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, England to James Gates and Sophia Davis, who were not yet married. Her birth was registered in Hemel Hempstead in the last quarter of the year (as Margaret Davis), with no mother's maiden name (indicating an unmarried mother).[1]

Although they didn't officially marry until 1842, Margaret's parents were living as husband and wife by the time of the 1841 census.

In 1841 Margarett Gates (age 1) lived at Precott's End in Hemel Hempstead with her father James (20-24), mother Sophia (25-29), sister Sarah Ann (3), and two others: James Fowler (30-34) and Thomas Butler (19-23).[2]

In 1851 Margaret Gates (age 11, Plaiter) lived in Hemel Hempstead with her father James (33, Ag Lab), mother Sophia (37, Plaiter), and four sisters: Sarah (13, Plaiter), Jane (8, Plaiter), Mary Ann (5, Plaiter), and Ann (0) - they were lodging in the household of Thomas Oliver (47, Farmer Employing 1 Lab & Occupying 116 Acres) and his wife Jane (55, Farmer Wife).[3]

Margaret Gates (age 21, Spinster, residing at Hemel Hempstead, daughter of James Gates, Labourer) and Joseph Pike (age 20, Bachelor, Labourer, residing at Hemel Hempstead, son of George Pike, Labourer) were married on 28 Jul 1860 at St Mary's in Hemel Hempstead - the witnesses were George Pike & Elizabeth Davis.[4][5] The marriage was registered in Hemel Hempstead in the third quarter of the year.[6]

Margaret and Joseph had nine children:

  1. William "Willie" Pike (1863-)
  2. Arthur Pike (1865-1865)
  3. Jane Elizabeth (Pike) Trowles (1866-1942)
  4. Frederick Pike (1868-1943?)
  5. Thomas Pike (1871-)
  6. Kate (Pike) Hooker (1875-1906)
  7. Arthur Pike (1877-)
  8. James George Pike (1879-)
  9. Edward John Pike (1881-1882)

In 1861 Margaret "Petre" [Pike] (age 21, Straw Plaiter) lived at Bury Mill End in Hemel Hempstead with her husband Joseph (21, Agricultural Labourer).[7]

In 1881 Margaret Pike (age 41) lived at Pinner Road in Watford, Hertfordshire with her husband Joseph (41, Farm Labourer) and seven children: William (17, Farm Labourer), Jane (14, Nursemaid), Frederick (12, Scholar), Kate (9 [6], Scholar), Arthur (6 [4], Scholar), Thomas (4 [9], Scholar), and James (2).[8] [Note: They listed the ages of their children in order, but Thomas is listed in the wrong place, which means the ages of Kate, Arthur, and Thomas are wrong.]

In 1891 Margaret Pike (age 51) lived at Lower Paddock Road in Bushey, Hertfordshire with her husband Joseph (51, Greengrocer) and three sons: Thomas (19, Hawker), Arthur (14), and James (12).[9]

Margaret's husband passed away in 1898.

In 1901 Margaret Pike (age 64) lived at Lower Paddock Road in Bushey with her son James (22, Greengrocer), daughter Kate Hooker (26), son-in-law David Hooker (22, General Labourer), and two grandsons: James Pike (13) and William Hooker (8).[10]

In 1911 Marguerite Pike (age 72, Old Age Pensioner) was a lodger in Watford in the household of William Henry Ashby.[11]

Margaret Pike passed away in 1915, aged 80 [~76] years. Her death was registered in Watford in the first quarter of the year.[12]
