Biography

Calvin Hugh Gates, son of Hugh Ernest Gates and Violet Jane Stout, was born on 4 December 1929 in Romeo, Macomb county, Michigan. ^[1]

In 1940 Calvin Gates is recorded as being thriteen years of age and living in the Household of his father in Romeo, Macomb county, Michigan. ^[2]

Calvin wed Maricele Zimmerman on 24 November 1948 in Albion, Calhoun county, Michigan. ^[3] They had the following children together:

1. Gena Joan Gates, born 19 Jul 1949, moved to Detroit after graduating from Albion College in 1971.
2. James Calvin Gates, born 17 June 1951, moved to East Lansing with his wife Connie Colbath and daughter Lani Mae Gates in 1971; both Jim & Connie got teaching certificates and degrees from Michigan State University; they then moved to Alaska in the 1970’s and taught in Alaska for about 30 years; they moved back to Grayling when they retired and lived in a house across the river from the Lodge for many years.
3. Thomas David Gates, born 8 Aug 1953, joined the Army and served 3 years in Germany.
4. Calvin Hugh Gates, Jr (“Rusty”), born 24 Sep 1955; he worked for the local propane gas company, bought a home downriver from the Lodge and began to work once again at the Lodge after his father died.
5. Jody Lynn Gates Martella Hinkle, born 4 Oct 1957, went to college at Central Michigan University, commuting from Grayling; she became a teacher and has 4 grown children.
6. Janelle Marian Gates Weiss Norman, born 5 Oct 1959, studied cosmetology at Ferris State University and then bought a beauty shop in Gaylord, Michigan.

In 1949 Calvin Gates was a sophomore student at Albion College, Albion, Michigan; he is listed as such in the school's yearbook Albionian. ^[4]

In 1970 Calvin and Maricele bought the Canoe Inn and re-named it Gates AuSable Lodge.
