Life Sketch • Civil War Veteran, Company E, 78th Illinois Infantry Cemetery notes and/or description:

Iowa City is a defunct townsite south of the Cimmarron River which was founded in the 22 April 1889 Land Run opening the Unassigned Lands of Indian Territory (or the "Oklahoma Lands"). Located in Antelope Township, or T17N R1W, Section 12 near the southeast quarter section on the Indian Meridian. The town died after William H. Coyle put in a rail station to the southeast of Iowa City in in North Cimmarron Township (which was opened to settlement with the Land Run of 1891 and added to Logan County) . Most all Iowa City residents moved to the new townsite to become Coyle after its founder.

Like the original townsite, Iowa City Cemetery is nearly lost and is overgrown with only a few headstones remaining.

I am also told that ................................ "William is buried in a cemetery on a university that was created in late 1800s for black students. Is is one of about 5 head stones that remain. You have to walk thru a thick grove of trees to find it."

It's Langston University, the cemetery is north west of college next to football field, Iowa City Cemetery, Langston, Logan County, Oklahoma, USA. Ruth Steele, his wife is buried there but the head stone is missing. My father, Charles Alva Gates gave me this information. My son Aaron Thomas Gates takes care of the grave site.
