Biography

Elisha was born on 10 May 1848 in Georgia.^[1][2]

In 1860, Elisha, age 12, was living in Gilmer, Georgia with his parents, Horace and Emily, and seven siblings: Elijah, age 15, Rachel, age 9, Mary, age 8, Sarah, age 6, Silas, age 4, Jacob, age 2, and Hezekiah, age 0.^[3]

In 1870, Elisha, age 23, Was living in Murray, Georgia with his mother, Emily, age 56, and seven siblings: Rachel, age 20, Mary, age 18, Sarah, age 16, Silas, age 14, Jacob, age 13, Hezekiah, age 10, and Jane, age 7. His older brother, Elijah, age 25, is living next door with his wife, Anne, and their one year old son, William.^[4]

Elisha married Elizabeth Dyson on 18 Aug 1870 in Murray, Georgia.^[5]

Elisha and Elizabeth had nine children over the next twenty years, with their youngest being Samuel, born in 1890.^[6]

He passed away on 15 Mar 1921 in Bradley, Tennessee.^[1][2]

Research Notes

Based on the death certificate for Elisha, his mother is Emily Harrison. From the 1860 census Elisha's parents were Horace and Emily. Horace was born about 1811 in South Carolina. Emily was born about 1815 in North Carolina. Based on the death record for Emily's child, Hezekiah Mashburn Gates, her spouse was Heratia Gates. Further resesarch is needed to determine the correct parents. Horace was in the 1860 census in Georgia, but not in the 1870 census. He may have passed away before 1870, and may have served in the Civil War. Emily was alive in the 1900 census at the age of 87. She had nine children with seven still living.
