Mary Gates is a part of US Black heritage.

Mary was born after 1858 in Georgia as a slave. She is the daughter of Draper Gates and Hannah Gates were also slaves.

Slave Owner

Upon Samuel Martin Gates death in 1860 she is listed on a probate inventory followed by Hannah, Minny, Phebe, and Alfred. (Nathan, Minerva, Frances, Biddy, and Jesse appear further through the list.) Pg. 212. See probate records below.

1870 census Mary Lilda is in a household of Draper Gates (father) and siblings Phoebe and Alfred, Martha "Minny"[1]
