Notes

  • James is the only one in Meriwether and none in Troup County, Georgia. He is thought to be a brother or some relation to Benjam A Gates as he is living quite close to Nancy Gates wife of Benjamin Kolb Gates. John Sheppard was a executor of Benjamin Alexander Gates will and this James, so they must be related. In his will he mentions other children, but Charles is the only one by name. In the will he calls his wife Nancy (will is the only information on her). In the census records his wife is called Elizabeth her records go to 1870/1874. The son Charles mentioned in the will - the only Charles C Gates in Troupe County, Georgia, I can find died before this will was written (but there is no picture of the tombstone, just a memorial.) Some of documents listed specially Ancestry leads in to information on The Benjamin A Gates and Benjamin Kolb Gates (wifes name Nancy Ann) family line.
  • James signature is on probate record, where William M Gates is stated as Guardian to the property of Elizabeth F.M. Gates, daughter of Benjamin M Gates, 1860. (https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/223961:8635)
  • Death of Daughter married name of Hardy, Pg.177. Marriage of daughter pg. 76.
