Biography

Oldham Gates Jr. (1765-1851), son of Capt. Oldham Gates Sr. (1716-1798) and Thankful Adams (1734-?), was a farmer and married twice.

He married his first wife, Rachel Stronach, around 1806, who died before 1814, and his second wife was Eleanor Slocum, aka Slocomb.

At the time of the 1838 Census, Wilmot contained 541 families. The total population was 3,358. The township of Wilmot was 16 miles in length and about 5 1/2 miles in width between the Annapolis River and the Bay of Fundy. There was also the District of Nictaux, part of Annapolis Township, on the south side of the river, containing 106 square miles. The area contains 125 miles of road.
