The wife of Thomas Evans was NOT Margaret Gatewood. His wife is recorded in one land record with his as only Margaret, wife of Thomas Evans.

No maiden name is known at this point. The woman named Margaret Gatewood who signed the Will of Thomas Evans in 1774 at Amherst Co VA was the wife of Ambrose Gatewood, a neighbor. People who signed documents were often neighbors, or relatives.

There was a Evans to Gatewood marriage, George Evans, s/o William, s/o Thomas Evans and Margaret Unknown, married Martha Patty Gatewood.

There is no question that the Evans and Gatewood families were neighbors, but Thomas' wife has never been idenitied as a Gatewood.

The confusion is by some researchers who saw the name Margaret Gatewood as a signer of the will of Thomas, but she would not have signed with a maiden name, she would have signed as Margaret Evans, wife of Thomas.
