OBITUARY

AGED JOHN GATINS DIES IN NINTH WARD - MAN WHO FORSOOK CONFEDERATE ARMY DURING REBELLION EXPIRED LAST EVENING. FUNERAL ON WEDNESDAY

John Gatins, aged about seventy years died of general debility last evening at the Gatins home No 763 Railroad Street, Ninth Ward, after a long illness. He was born in Ireland, but came to America many years ago and settled in the South, where he was forced to enlist in the Southern army during the Rebellion. He, however, was not long in the service until he reached the line of the Federal Army and left Gen. Lee's forces, throwing away his gray uniform because he was not at heart a supporter of the Confederacy.

Some time later Mr Gatins came to Johnstown and worked for a while as an agent before securing a position with the Cambria Iron Company. When he was compelled to relinquish his duties with the local concern some time ago he was employed as a watchman. Mr Gatins and Miss Catherine Kelly were married at St. John's Church here forty-one years ago. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Frank, the well known professional baseball player, at present located at Newark, N. J. ; Bridget, wife of William Campbell, who resides in the rear of the Gatins' home; John, Jr, of Church Street; Miss Kathryn an employee of the Johnstown Telephone Company and Miss Rosella and James Gatins at home.

The funeral will take place at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning from St. John's Catholic Church of which the deceased is a member. Interment will be made in the church cemetery in Geistown.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
