Mary Gatton, daughter of Thomas Gatton, Jr. and Elizabeth Waters, was born circa 1736 in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
She married George Bean with whom she had the following eight known children:
Mary died in Prince George’s County sometime between the birth of her youngest child in 1775 and 31 August 1776.
Mary Gatton is the proven first wife of George Bean of Prince George's County, Maryland.
She is mention by her married name in both of her parents' wills. George Bean (of Prince George's County) is named as son-in-law and executor in the will of Mary's mother, Elizabeth Gatton.
Mary is also the proven mother of Thomas, Priscilla, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Ammey, George, Carlton and Levi Bean.
She is named as mother on the parish register of births for Elizabeth, Ammey, George and Levi. Her eldest son, Thomas is named in the will of Mary's father. Benjamin and Carlton are named as siblings of Elizabeth in an 1811 document concerning Carlton's estate - as only full siblings could inherit from one another in the early 19th century, this document proves that Benjamin and Carlton are Mary's sons.[1] Daughter Priscilla had to be born circa 1760 in order to be old enough to marry in 1778 (her husband, John Masters named as son-in-law in George Bean's will), so she, too, could only have been born to Mary.
The date of Mary's death was after son Levi's birth which was recorded in the Piscataway Parish register in 1775 and before 31 August 1776, as George and his family are shown on the 1776 colonial census and he is the only adult listed (all females were age 18 and under). She may have died in childbirth or postpartum from complications.
After Mary's death, George married Ann Jones in 1778.
Please note: the book "Clan MacBean in North America, Volume II" has erroneously identified the George Bean of Prince George's County Maryland as the son of Robert Bean and Margaret Hebb Bean of Colonial Maryland. It also incorrectly states that all of George Bean's children were born to second wife, Ann Jones.
The correct son of Robert Bean and Margaret Hebb is George Bean of Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland who married 1) Ann Dillon in 1779, and 2) Harriett Cox. He possibly also married widow Mary Wherritt in 1806.
