Jean Gaudet was born about 1675 in Port Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, son of Jean Gaudet (about 1653–1694) and Marie Françoise Comeau (about 1654–before 1678). Both died in Port Royal after his birth, indicating that the family lived there for quite a while.[1]
Jean Gaudet appeared twice in the 1686 census at Port Royal.[2]
First, in 1686, at Port Royal, Jean, aged 12, lived with his father, Jean Godet [sic], aged 45 [sic], and his mother-in-law, Jeanne Henry, aged 30, and his sister, Francoise, aged 13. Three other children from his father's first marriage lived with them. His father's mother, Nicole Colson [sic], aged 80, lived with them also. The family owned 1 gun and lived on 4 arpents of cultivable land with 4 cattle, 4 sheep and 3 hogs.
Second, in 1686, at Port Royal, Jean, aged 12, lived with his father, Jean Godet [sic], aged 33, and his mother-in-law, Jeanne, aged 21 [sic], and their children, Marie, aged 4, and Jeanne, aged 1. His sister Francoise, aged 13 also lived with him. The family owned 2 guns and lived on 4 arpents of cultivable land with 10 cattle, 17 sheep and 4 hogs.
In 1693, at Minas, Jean, aged 18, lived with his father, Jean Godet [sic] (widower), aged 47 [recte 40], and his sister, Francoise, aged 20. He also lived with his half-sisters: Marie, aged 12, and Anne Marie, aged 10 [recte 4]. The family owned 1 gun and lived on 6 arpents with 15 cattle, 10 sheep, and 10 pigs.[3]
Jean married Elisabeth Bourg (born about 1676 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France; daughter of Jean Bourg and Marguerite Martin) about 1697.[1]
