Pierre Gaudet was born about 1654 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, son of Denis Gaudet (abt. 1625–1709) and Martine Gauthier (abt. 1619–abt. 1678).[1]
He is found living with his parents at age 17 in Port Royal in 1671: at Port Royal: Denis Gaudet, 46, wife, Martine Gauthier 62; Children (the first 2 married): Anne 25, Marie 21, Pierre 20, Pierre 17, Marie 14; cattle 9, sheep 13.[2]
Just a few years later, he is married and living with his wife and two sons, age 3 and 5 months[3][4], giving him a marriage date of about 1675[1].
In 1686, at Port Royal, Pierre GODET [sic], the younger (le Jeune), aged 32, was living with his wife, Marie BLANCHARD, aged 30, and their 5 children: Pierre, aged 10, Antoine, aged 7, Germain, aged 5, Guillaume, aged 3 and Denis, aged 2 months. They owned 2 guns and were living on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 10 cattle, 18 sheep and 10 hogs.[5]
In August 1695, Pierre signed a loyalty oath to the King of England. Unable to sign his name, he made a mark on the document on which it is written: "Wee do swear and sincerely promise that wee will be faithfull and bear true allegiance to his Majesty King William King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland. So helpe us God." [6]
Ten years later, the family was almost complete when Marie was pregnant with their last child in 1698[7] as the last baby was present in 1700.[8] In 1703 there were 7 boys and 3 girls in the family home. [9]
His land holdings became significant, with 12 arpents and quite a few animals in 1707[10]. He was only one of two grown Godets in Port Royal by 1714[11], his older brother and several others were living in Beaubassin by then.
He died having received the sacraments on December 8, 1741 and was buried at Beaubassin, Acadie [12][1]
Research Notes
Pierre 'the younger' Gaudet and Pierre 'the elder' Gaudet are both listed on the 1671 Census. They were brothers, and both married women named Blanchard. Each had a son named Jean or Jean Baptiste. Anne, born about 1645, married the elder Pierre, and Marie, born about 1656, married the younger Pierre.
There is confusion about which Pierre Gaudet died in 1741. There is a record that states a Pierre Gaudet died on 8 Dec. 1741, aged 89, which would give a birth year of about 1652, consistent with the older brother; however, their birth dates are only about 2 years apart, and age at death in a record is very unreliable. Both brothers had the same death date.
According to Stephen White's Dictionnaire, p. 673, who had access to the original census records:
In the 1693 census, the Tim Hébert transcription lists 29 arpents of land. There were 25. [13]
In the 1798 census, the Tim Hébert transcription lists 72 fruit trees. There were 12.
In the 1701 census, 5 children were omitted, and the others were all incorrectly named. [14]
In the 1707 census, certain children were omitted.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Pierre by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.

The two brothers named Pierre Gaudet have been given the same death date. I don't know how to decide which one died in 1741. I have marked them both uncertain. Can anyone provide more information about this?
Gaudet-738 and Gaudet-11 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same wife - need to find out which birth and death date is most accurate
On the gedcom I received, the source for burial is "Acadian Parish Remembered: The Registers of St Jean-Baptiste, Annapolis Royal, 1702-1755, An," RG 1, vol. 26a, p. 212.
For Pierre l'aine Gaudet the source for death is Milton P. and Norma Gaudet Rieder, Acadian Church Records, vol. II (Metairie, LA: Authors, 1976), p. 18. Covers year 1712-1748. The geneaologist who ran my gedcom is the same one doing work for rootsweb, but the information may vary as, like WikiTree, it is a work in progress. I have found very few discrepancies so far. I'm sure she will like for us to let her know if we find the death dates have been reversed for these two brothers.
