Biography

Caution: two brothers Jacques Philippe Godin and Joseph Godin, married two sisters Marie Anne Bergeron and Anne Marie Bergeron

Joseph (dit BELLEFONTAINE dit BEAUSÉJOUR), son of Gabriel & Andrée-Angélique JEANNE (JASNE), born around 1695, was on the 1698 census at Riv St-Jean, age 3 years; [1]; Joseph's father was in the military, which is now they came to live at Riviere Saint Jean (Fort Nashwaak).

He married around 1725 at Riv St-Jean to Marie-Anne BERGERON dit d'AMBOISE, daughter of Barthélemy & Genevieve SERREAU de SAINT-AUBIN.[2] [3]

Their known children were:

  1. Anastasie Godin (about 1730 – Feb 1759) .
  2. Barthélemy Godin (1735 – about Jul 26 1771) .
  3. Bonaventure Godin (1736 – before Apr 9 1766) .
  4. Jacques Godin (about 1739 – unknown) .
  5. Paul Godin (about 1742 – about 1815)

He and his wife and five children plus one servant lived just below Ekoupage of Riviere St. Jean in 1739.[4]

They lived a fairly well off life there until 1759. Joseph had a good relationship with the indians, inherited a nice piece of land from his father, and was hired as the kings interpreter. He was a major of the national militia in Saint Jean.[5]. Though his burial record says Isle Saint Jean, other reports of his life indicate that he lived his Acadian life at Riviere Saint Jean.[6] After Joseph refused to sign the allegiance to the British king, he and his family were taken prisoner first in Annapolis Royal, then Boston, Halifax, England and finally he was sent to Cherbourg.

The family was finally deported to France where he was found on the 1761 Cherbourg census; in 1767, age 71 years; [7] in 1772, age 77 years.

He died 23 Dec 1776. [8][5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Gaudin-27 and Godin-1034 appear to represent the same person because: Genealogists Stephen White and Karen Theriot Reader, as well as researcher Marcel Walter Landry list only one Joseph in this family. In the 1698 census at Rivière St Jean, there was only 1 Joseph age 3. There is no documented evidence of a second child with the same name.

Hi, Dawn, I was reviewing this possible match and the idea that they could be brothers. Both sources cite the same page from Stephen White, in which his death is 12/23/1776 (which not on either profile in the data), both profiles cite same article about him from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. His family living in 1698 has no other child who could be one of these as a brother (link provided on Godin-30. Is there something in particular that would make them brothers rather than duplicates? Godin-203 and Godin-128 appear to represent the same person because: I discovered this while linking another profile to the family. The birth dates are close but the death date isn't. The profiles are linked to the same parents and spouse. Are they brothers or is this the same person?
