Biography

John Gaulden was born in Prince Edward County, Virginia about 1735 to John Gaulding and Elizabeth Geers.

From Prince Edward County In The French War[1]

"Freeman Lewelling, John Gaulding, Chas. Howall and James Foster, severally privates in late war between Great Britain and France, under command of Col. Wm. Byrd, and continued in service during their enlistments. Prince Edward Co., Feby. Court, 1780." ^[2] "For participation in the wars of the Colony of Virginia against the French and Indians, and for service rendered by the Militia in defence of the frontiers, the King's Proclamation of 1763 granted certain amounts of land. The amount given to field officers was 5,000 acres ; to captains, 3,000 acres ; to subalterns or staff officers, 2,000 acres ; to non-commissioned officers, 200 acres ; to privates, 50 acres."

"The newspaper obituary quoted below is also in possession of Louise Shaver. Other family records indicate that Sarah Gaulden Freeman's mother was Susan Brumfield; that her parents were married in P.E., Va. and some of the older children were born there; and that they moved to South Carolina before the Revolution."^[3]

Died of small pox, possibly contracted during or around the time of the Revolutionary Battle of Eutaw Springs, Orangeburg SC. Though he died around the time of the battle and possibly died in or around the battleground he was not serving with Francis Marion. If he was there and died there, he was supplying the troops or his son, James Gaulden, who was a Captain in Marions Troops. He is listed as a Patriot in the DAR for Civil Service, serving as a Petit Juror in South Carolina during the Revolutionary period.' You may find more at his Find A Grave: Memorial #71841321

From Virginia Colonial Militia, 1651-1776, Land Bounty Certificates, p.31, Edited by, William Armstrong Crozier, Baltimore, Southern Book Co., 1954.[2] "Freeman Lewelling, John Gaulding, Chas. Howall and James Foster, severally privates in late war between Great Britain and France, under command, of Col. Wm. Byrd, and continued in service during their enlistments. Prince Edward Co., Feby. Court, 1780." This would be from the French Indian War (1754-1763). If this is for John Jr. It would be given very close to his Death Date.
