Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Elizabeth (Gaunders) Roseman is a part of US Black heritage.

Lizzie was born in 1895 in Calhoun County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Pomp Gardner and Amanda Nicholson.

Lizzie married John Roseman about 1903 (they had been married 7 years at the time of the 1910 U.S. Census). Lizzie and John had 10 children and raised them in Terrell County, Georgia where they were farmers. John died before 1940.

Lizzie died before 1950.

Research Notes

  • The last name of "Gardner" is probably the correct one.

A couple of assumptions have been made in connecting "Mary" Elizabeth Lizzie Gardner with her birth family:

  • There is a gap in knowledge given the available documents (lack of 1890 u.s. census) and the early death of Lizzie's mother, but the available records and places and names indicate that Lizzie was the person known as Mary, recorded on the 1900 U.S. Census as the daughter of Paul (Pomp) Gardner; age 15, born March of 1885, living in Leary, Calhoun County, Georgia, USA.[1]
  • Lizzie's Social Security records provide the names of her parents: "Porup Gardners and Amanda Nicholson."
  • To further confuse matters, Lizzie and John were recorded with much older ages on the 1910 U.S. Census. Lizzie's family was counted five households ahead of them, however, so it does seem most likely that this was their entry with an age error.
  • Lizzie and John's children were not counted with them on the 1910 U.S. Census, but she reported 4 children born and 4 living. Only three children born before 1910 were reported on the family's 1920 U.S. Census: Clarence (1904), Minnie (1907), & Judge (1908).
  • This was John's 2nd marriage. He may have been married to a Henretta and had seven children between 1890 and 1899. But only a 1900 U.S. Census has been located.[2]
  • Death records have not been located for Lizzie. She was counted with trhee of her children and still farming on the 1940 U.S. Census and she made her Social Security claim in 1944. None of her children who have been located on the 1950 U.S. Census included Lizzie in their households. The youngest child, Elizabeth was living with her sister Fannie Mae who was married to Otis Redding Sr. (1913-1968).[3] The next to youngest, Will, was married and living with his own family.
