Biography

Joseph Louis Gauthier de Varennes was the son of Joseph Gauthier de Varennes and Brigitte Rhodes. He was born 9 December 1791 and baptized the same day in L'Ancienne-Lorette, in modern-day Québec. His godparents were Jean Baptiste Legaré and Charlotte Sarrazin, widow de Varennes.[1]

On 3 February 1817, at the age of twenty-five, Joseph married Marie Alain in L'Ancienne-Lorette. Joseph's witnesses were his father Joseph, his uncle Etienne, and Jean Baptiste Dufresne.[2]

Joseph and Marie had the following known children:

  1. Marie, born 25 January 1818
  2. Joseph, born 2 January 1820
  3. Jean, born 12 July 1821
  4. Amable, born 30 April 1823
  5. Michel, born 15 March 1825
  6. Adélaïde, born 12 April 1827; died 7 May 1827
  7. Adélaïde, born 21 June 1828
  8. Sophie, born 29 July 1830
  9. Etienne, born 29 October 1833
  10. Eli, born 13 September 1836

Joseph's family was among the first to move from L'Ancienne-Lorette to the nearby settlement of Bourg-Louis, which came to be called Saint-Raymond after the official founding of the parish in 1844. Joseph was enumerated there on the 1842 Census as the head of a household of eight people. At the time the census was taken, the family had 204 acres of land and they grew rye, oats, peas, buckwheat, potatoes, and maple sugar. They also had one cow, one horse, and three hogs.[3]

Joseph's wife Marie passed away 8 October 1845, and Joseph himself died 14 November 1847, at the age of fifty-five. He was buried the next day in St-Raymond.[4]
