Lionel (Léo) Georges Gauthier (1934-2017)

On Dec. 6, 1934, Regina St-Amour & Emile Gauthier had their 4th child. Their first child was Emilia who was 5 years old, their second was Fleurette Annette who die when she was 4 months old, and their third was Reginald who died when he was 2 years old, just 7 months before Léo. Two more girls were born after him, Laurentia and Corana. When his mother was pregnant with Corana her husband Emile died of tuberculosis, Leo was 4 years old. Still feeling the effects of the Great Depression with his mother in a new relationship, they moved to Valleyfield QC. Not long after, his sister Emilia was sent to live in a convent, with his mother stuck in an abusive relationship, things went from bad to worse. In 1948 the whole family moved to Mattawa and Leo got a job on the construction of La Cave Dame which started in 1949. Things started to finally take a positive turn. At 18, in 1952, Leo joined the Canadian Air Force. He served from 1952 to 1955 and from 1958 till 1982 when he took his honourable discharge, he was 48. His mother remarried in 1960 to Albert Janveaux. Leo was also a member and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 395 in Lanark Ont. On Aug. 11, 1956, he married Jacqueline Patry. Leo & Jacqueline had 3 boys and 4 girls. Helen Campbell (Bob), Susan Chambers (Malcolm), Claude “Chum”, Roger (Charlena), Mike (Marilyn), Carol (Leo St. Amour) and Joanne Lowe (Mark). Loved by 18 grandchildren and cherished by many great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews. His wife Jacqueline passed on Nov. 01, 2007. They were married for 51 years.
