Martine Gauthier was born around 1619. Here parents are unknown.[1] Around 1645 she married Denis Gaudet, a ploughman, son of Jean and an unknown mother. [1] Between about 1646 and 1657 they had five children, 3 girls and 2 boys: Anne, Marie, Pierre l'aîné, Pierre le jeune, and Marie. [2][3]
The family was listed in the 1671 Acadian census at Port-Royal. [4] There were 5 children in the household, ages 14 to 25. Denis 46 years of age, and Martine who was about 52 at the time, owned 9 cattle, 13 sheep and 6 arpents of land.
Martine died before the census of 1678 since that year Denis was counted as a widower in his eldest son's household.[5]
The death location of Rivière-aux-Canards, Grand-Pré is marked uncertain since there is no documented proof to support this claim. No location is given by Stephen White in the Dictionnaire.
DNA. The Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project is conducting ongoing research to verify their origins. In 2010, Stephen White reported that Martine Gauthier had a J1b1 haplogroup. I don't know the details re how many of her descendants were tested to support this report. Lucie Leblanc Constantino describes one maternal tree here. Ongoing test results are also reported here. As of May 2014, 2 of 2 descendants have reported a J haplogroup, indicating European origins.
According to Stephen White, mitochondrial DNA tests (haplotype J1b1) in their descendants demonstrate that a close relationship could exist between Martine Gauthier, wife of Denis Gaudet, and Marie Unknown, first wife of François Gautrot (see S.A. White, "Mitochondrial DNA of Acadian mothers", CEA, files genealogical, various). Without other clues, it is impossible to determine their relationship more precisely.[6]

Research Notes

The parents of Martine are as yet unknown. Removed Martin Gauthier (1590-1636) and Marie Allain (abt.1593-) from her profile as there is no proof or even a sourced hint of possibility (other than family trees) that these are her parents. (Bourque-573 17:22, 10 January 2022 (UTC))

"Father Archange Godbout described Jean Gaudet as being the Abraham of Acadia, so many are his descendants. According to the 1671 census, Jean Gaudet was born around 1575. We do not know the name of his first wife. Around 1652, he married Nicole Colleson. From the first marriage was born around 1625 son Denis, who married, around 1645, with Martine Gauthier. Denis and Martine gave birth to five children, including two sons who bore the first name Pierre. Pierre Gaudet the elder, born around 1652, took for wife, around 1672, Anne Blanchard, daughter of Jean Blanchard and Radegonde Lambert, and widow of François Guérin. He lived in Port-Royal, where he died on December 8, 1741..."

Gauthier-969 and Gauthier-61 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same birth year and general location. Same spouse mentioned in Gauthier 969. NO conflicting information.

Gauthier-613 and Gauthier-61 appear to represent the same person because: Same name. Birthdate close (1622 was an estimate based on marriage date in biography). Marriage date in biography of 1644 is basically same as estimated date of 1645 for Gauthier-61. Death date of 1711 is unsourced, no evidence. Death location same.

Does anyone have information on her parents? These seem to have come from a family tree only. No mention of parents by White or Reader. The G2G post by Lianne did not produce anything except speculation on where she was born.

Thank you!

Hi Cindy, like you pointed out, there don't seem to be any reliable sources for Martine Gauthier's parents. I'd suggest that the current uncertain parents Gauthier-116 and Allain-574 should be removed. Several Ancestry trees have her parents as Philippe Gauthier (Gaultier-41) and Marie Pichon (Pichon-3), who married in 1618 in France. Marie Pichon and some of her children emigrated to Quebec. But again, there doesn't seem to be any reasoning behind this assumed parentage besides the shared surname.
Thank you. I found none of those family trees had a source. Removed them and added a research note. Thanks for your support on this as none of the PM's had responded. Cindy
