Biography

Richard Gawthrop

He was born about 1832, being baptised at Histon, Cambridgeshire, England on 30 Sep 1832. The baptism register states that his father, William was an agricultural labourer. [1] He is the son of William Gawthrop and Sarah Carter.
His mother, Sarah died of smallpox in 1836, being buried at Histon on 9 Jan 1836. There seems to have been an outbreak of smallpox in Histon in Jan/Feb 1836, with five people, including Sarah dying of it at this time. Sarah is said to be aged 34 in the burial register.[2]
Four years later, on 27 Oct 1840, Richard's father William, married again, this time to Harriet Watts. [3] They had five children[4].
Then, in 1847, Richard's father, William died, being buried at Histon, Cambridgeshire on 14 Oct 1847, when he was said to be aged 44 in the burial register. [5]
It is clear from later census returns that, although they never married, Richard formed a relationship with his step mother, Harriet, and that they lived as a couple at Histon, having at least seven children. Although Richard is not named as the father of these children in the baptism register it seems clear from the census returns that he is almost certainly the father.[6] Indeed, by the time of the 1871 census, Richard is explicitly shown as the head of the household and father of the children. Charles Gawthrop (1861-1909) M. Annie Watts
Richard worked as an agricultural labourer into his seventies; at age 82 he was a pensioner. [8] [9] [10] [11].
He passed away in Histon, of a stroke on 17 Sep 1913. His death was reported in The Cambridge Independant Press of 19 Sep 1913 as "Octogenarians death - After being taken ill with a stroke on Monday morning, a pensioner of Church end, Histon, succumbed on Wednesday morning without recovering consciousness. For a number of years previously Mr Gawthrop had been employed upon the Impington Park estate and was in his 82nd year. The interment takes place at the cemetary tomorrow, Saturday. [12]
