Biography

John Gawthrop was christened at Histon, Cambridgeshire, on 9 December 1821^[1]. He was the son of Richard Gawthrop, an agricultural labourer, and Sarah Gawthrop, née Crane, who lived in Histon^[2].

John married Charlotte Mansfield, a butcher's daughter, at Histon on 21 January 1845^[3]. The couple had at least eight children: Richard, Lawrence, William, Elizabeth, Sarah, Anna Maria^[5], Mary^[6], and Frederick^[7].

John started out as an agricultural labourer^[4] but by 1871 was a butcher and publican, in 1871 a butcher and farmer^[7], and in 1881 a farmer and brewer employing two men and a boy. The butchery business may have continued however as John's son Frederic was a butcher living with John in 1891^[9].

John died in Cambridgeshire in 1900^[10].
