U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Joane (Gawton) Hunt was a Virginia colonist.

She was born on 17 Nov 1602 [1] in Reigate, Surrey, England and her parents were Patience (Best) and Thomas Gawton, Sr.

She was christened on 10 Nov 1607 in Merstham, Surrey, England. [2]

Joane Gawton first married on 06 Jun 1622 in Merstham, Surrey, England to Robert Drake [3] [4] of Merstham, Surrey, England. He was the 4th son of Henry Drake of Frenches and his wife, Mary Lee.

The couple had 1 son (Robert) and 2 daughters (Elizabeth & Mary, m: Richard Hill), when they emigrated to Virginia in 1836. They settled in Accomack County, Virginia, where Robert patented 200 acres of land at Maggettey Bay.

By1636 the Drake family had emigrated from England to Virginia [5] and settled in Accomack County (later Northampton County, Virginia, USA). Her husband, Robert, soon died intestate.

On 08 Sep 1636 her husband, Robert Drake (Sr.) was noted as deceased, in a patent to his son, Robert Drake (Jr.). [6]

Joane married secondly on 29 Mar 1641 in Accomack County, Virginia to Thomas Hunt (c1600-c1656) [7]

She made her last Will on 20 January 1656/57 in Northampton County, Virginia and soon passed away. [8]

On 26 Feb 1657 her estate was in the probate court of Northampton County, Virgina. [9]

Doubtful she had 2 daughters named Mary born 2 years apart and both lived to adulthood. One shows as daughter of 2nd spouse, Thomas Hunt, but they did not marry until 1641 yet she was born in 1623 while she was still newly married to Robert Drake. The bio does not show a 2nd Mary for either spouse. Should Mary Hunt Johnson be removed as her daughter? Or, should she be merged with Mary Drake Hill?

Gawton-19 and Gawton-1 appear to represent the same person because: dups with same parents and same 2 spouses and same children. Both profiles have now been cleaned and include sources. If you think any children need to be removed, there is no reason that can't be done after the merge is complete. Wikitree policy is that each individual should have only one profile. Thanks for your co-operation.

It does not seem possible that Mary Hunt Johnson, Robert Hunt, and Elizabeth Hunt are children of Thomas and Joane Gawton Hunt who marreied in 1641 in Virginia. These children are listed as being born in England before 1641. Thomas Gawton I (father of this profile) and Thomas Gawton Sr (father of Gawton-1) need to be merged first and before that, removed as brothers. Otherwise a lot of profiles will become very tangled up and more complicated to fix after.

Gawton-19 and Gawton-1 are not ready to be merged because: Need to clean up Gawton-19 before merging. Gawton-19 has no sources and Family Search is not a source.

Elizabeth Drake-1802 is not a daughter of Joane Gawton-1 Drake.

Gawton-18 and Gawton-1 do not represent the same person because: They are completely two different people. The dates don't match.

Gawton-18 and Gawton-1 do not represent the same person because: Everything doesn't match except the husband. But the husband doesn't belong with #18,

Gawton-6 and Gawton-2 appear to represent the same person because: clear duplicates
Gawton-2 and Gawton-6 do not represent the same person because: Jane was Thomas' sister.
I removed Francis Drake from this marriage. He may have been married to a Jane Gawton, some show as such, but I'm certain it was not this Jane.
