Biography

This profile is part of the Whiting Name Study.

Joanna Gay was born on 23 March 1645 (23 (1) 1645) in Dedham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Her parents were John and Joanna (Hooker) Gay.[1] Joanna was baptized on 30 April 1645, in Dedham.[2][3]

Joanna married Nathaniel Whiting on 29 March 1664, in Dedham.[4][5][3]

Joanna and Nathaniel had children, the first born in Dedham, the rest in Medfield, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony:[6]

  1. Joana (1665), married John Blake
  2. Nathaniel (1667-1693), died unmarried
  3. John (1669), married Mary Billings
  4. Samuel (1671), married Mary Clark
  5. Hezekiah (1673)

Joanna's husband Nathaniel died before 9 September 1676, when his inventory was appraised. His probate shows that he died intestate and that he was living in Medfield when he died. Joanna and her father John Gay Sr. were the administrators of the estate.[7]

Joanna married, second, John Ware, as his second wife, on 24 March 1678/9, in Dedham.[8]

Joanna and John had children, all born in Wrentham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony:[9]

  1. Abigail (1680/1), married Thomas Throope
  2. Joseph (1681), died as infant
  3. Joseph (1682), married Hannah Wood
  4. Mary (1684), married Francis Nicholson
  5. Zachariah (twin) (1684), died as infant
  6. Hannah (1686), married Joshua Fairbanks
  7. Benjamin (1688), married Melatiah Fisher

Joanna died on 26 October 1708, in Wrentham.[10][3] John Ware married, third, Dorothy (Rice) Wood, widow of Eleazer.
