Biography

Ann Jane Gay the daughter of James and Margaret Gay was born in or before 1843 in the Illawarra District of New South Wales, Australia. Supposedly at Fairy Meadow in what is now Wollongong City in early July 1843.[1]

She was Christened in the Camden County, New South Wales, Australia which includes the Illawara, Shoalhaven, Berrima and Kiama districts on July 26, 1843.[2]

She married George Henry Watson in 1860 at or about Kiama, New South Wales, Australia.[3]

They went on to have as many as 18 children over the next 25 years. 14 of them were still alive when George died in 1922 and at least 15 still alive when she herself passed away in 1916.[4][5]

Ann Jane Watson nee Gay is buried in the Nowra Cemetery, Princes Highway, Nowra, New South Wales, Australia.[6][7]

    The death of Mrs. Geo. Watson, at the advanced age 74 years, occurred at the homestead, Numba, early on Tuesday morning last. Deceased had been in good health up to some few months ago when she had a serious illness but it was thought she had recovered. However on Monday night became suddenly ill and passed away some few hours afterwards. The late Mrs. Watson might be classed as one of the pioneers of the district having resided with her husband at Kangaroo Valley for over 30 years prior to them going to live at Numba. Besides her bereaved husband she leaves a large grown-up family members of whom are Messrs James and Thomas Watson of Kangaroo Valley, Fred, of the Government printing Office of Sydney, George and Ted (Norther Rivers), Christy and Herb. (Numba), and Mrs P. Lestrange (Kangaroo Valley), Mrs. T. Kavanagh (Nowra), Mrs. Warland (Sydney), Mrs. T Price and Mrs. Sinclair (North Coast) and Mrs J. Nelson (Kangaroo Valley). The funeral took place on Wednesday and was largely attended, her mortal remains being laid to rest in the Presbyterian portion of the Nowra public cemetery.
