ELOPEMENT IN POMEROY.

Special to the Chronicle via Grapevine Telegraph.

The usually quiet town of Pomeroy was thrown into a tremor of excrement this morning by the report that one Gay, a tooth carpenter from Lewiston, had eloped with Miss Martha, daughter of B. F. Shonkwiler of that place. This is the same chap who something over a year ago, made himself too officious by running after Miss Shonkwiler, then a girl in short dresses. Her father ordered him to stay away from the place, but he still paid her clandestine visits. As he was a worthless scoundrel, the good citizens of the town thought they could spare him from their midst, and as he had such in influence over the child, it was thought best to invite him to emigrate. He did so by daylight next morning, since which time he has made his home in Lewiston. The father and mother of the deluded girl are visiting friends in Oregon, and taking advantage of their absence, the fellow has swooped down and carried off his treasure. The girl is to be pitied and her parents are deserving of much sympathy.

AGED DENTIST IS DEAD

Dr. C. A. Gay, for Seventeen Years a Practitioner In Seattle, Dies Unexpectedly of Bright’s Disease.

Dr. Charles R[sic]. Gay, in point of actual practice, the oldest dentist in Seattle, dropped dead at the home of his sister, Mrs. Day, on Brooklyn Avenue, at an early hour this morning, at the age of fifty-nine years. Dr. Gay expired in the bathroom and was found a few minutes later by the family.

For more than a year Dr. Gray has been suffering from a urinal trouble that a short time ago developed into Bright’s disease. In spite of this ailment, Dr. Gay maintained his office in the Rainier Block, northeast corner of Second Avenue and Marion Street, until a few days ago, when he went to his sister’s home.

Dr. Gay had lived in Seattle for almost eighteen years and during the greater part of that time kept his offices in the Rainier Building. His picture painted on the side of the building has been a familiar sign for years. For a dentist of the old school Dr. Gay is said to have had no superior and few equals in this part of the country.

A widow and one son, Lloyd, and two sisters, Mrs. Day and Mrs. Holcomb, survive Dr. Gay. No arrangements have been made for the funeral, which will probably be held from the Bonney-Watson Co. chapel Sunday.
