Samuel was born in 1688. Samuel's position in the Gay family is shown by his will, recorded in the Norwich Probate District on Apr. 21, 1772, which mentions sons Philip, John and Elisha and daughters Mary and Hannah. The birth of these children to Samuel and Joanna Gay is recorded in the vital records of Swansea,Massachusetts, and Lebanon, Connecticut.[1]
Johanna died in 1758 and Samuel married second Miriam Collins, but the marriage was not added to the record until after Samuel's death:
Mrs. Joanna: ye wife of mr Samuell Gay Died 17th: march 1757
Mr. Samuel Gay, Aged 85 years, Died March 27th, 1772:
New Concord Norwich June 22nd: 1772: These may Certifie that Samuel Gay, and Miriam Collins were married according to law on June 21st: 1759: [signed] me Benjamin Throop Clerk. Entered June 26th, 1772 [signed] Benj. Huntington Jur. Register.[2]
This suggests that with Samuel's death, the government or family wanted it on record that he had a subsequent spouse, Miriam, and they needed to make sure it was on the record (since we do not find it recorded in the normal vital records of the time).

I'm not understanding the opening sentence of this profile.
It says that the position of Samuel in the Gay family is indicated by his own will. But that will lists his *children* and says nothing about his own position in *his* family of origin. How do we know that the testator of 1771 was the son of Samuel Gay and Abigail Curtis? (I have the same question for his father whose profile opens with the same language.)
The entry is interesting; it includes the death of Johanna, the death of Samuel and the second marriage of Samuel; here's a transcript:
