Biography
The daughter of James Lafayette Gay (1864-1937), a funeral director, and Martha Elizabeth Teeple (1864-1932), Goldie was born in Decatur, Indiana in 1885.[1] Her siblings included:
Claude C. (1890-)
Ruth B. (1892-)
J. Fred (1897-)
Richard (1898-)
William J. (1903-)
In 1910, at age 25, she lived at home in Decatur, along with most of her siblings, and worked as a stenographer for an insurance company.[2] In 1920, Goldie, Ruth, William and Fred were all still living at home, and working.[3] Between 1920 and 1930, her father, approaching retirement, left the funeral business and Indiana, moving to Alma, Michigan to open a 5¢-and-10¢ store there; Goldie worked there as a cashier in 1930.[4] In Alma, she met three-times-widowed George Smith, who also worked as a clerk at her father's 5¢-and-10¢ store, and they married in Alma on April 28, 1932.[5]
Goldie passed away in Alma at the age of 73 and is buried at Decatur Cemetery in Decatur, Indiana.[6]
