Biography

Samuel's position in the Gay family is shown by his last Will, recorded in the Windham Probate District on 13 March 1753, which mentions son Joseph and daughters Abigail, Mehitable, Mary, Prudence, Hannah and Sarah. The birth of these children to Samuel and Abigail Gay is recorded in the vital records of Roxbury and Swansea, Massachusetts.^[1]

The last Will of Samuel Gay of Lebanon, Connecticut dated 29 November 1746, probated on 13 March 1753; "considering my old age" Bequests were made to son Samuel (named executor), daughter Sarah (recieved the house and movable goods as long as she remained single, son Joseph Gay and grandson Samuel Gay, and daughters Abigail, Mary, Prudence, Hannah, Mehitabel and Sarah. Inventory taken 23 March 1753. A distribution was signed (most by mark) by Joseph Gay, Samuel Gay, Ebenezer Lyon, Abigail Lyon, Mehitabel Woodworth, Mary Gay, Prudence Bard, David Woodworth, Hannah Woodworth, Sarah Gay.^[2]

Samuel's sister Mary wrote her Will in 1755: Mary Gay of Lebanon, Connecticut, dated 18 July 1755; exhibited in court 16 September 1755. She made bequests to her sister Prudence Beard; Prudence's share to Brother Samuel Gay's two daughters Mary Reed & Hannah Coleman when Prudence dies; to my brother Lion's daughters son Nehemiah Lothrop; brother Samuel Gay as Executor. 17 June 1756, Prudence Beard divided her share before her death to Mary Reed, wife of Nathan Reed, and Hannah Coleman, wife of John Coleman. • John Gay (1610-1688), a native of England, married Joanna Baldwickie, a widow, in 1638 at Dedham, Massachusetts. They had eleven children, 1639-1656. Their grandson, Samuel Gay (1663-1753), was born at Wrentham, Massachusetts, son of Samuel Gay (1739-1718). He and his wife, Abigail (1666-1744) were married in 1685. They had eight children, 1688-1701. Samuel and Abigail Gay died at Lebanon, Connecticut. Descendants listed lived in Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois, Iowa, and elsewhere.
