Edward prepared for college at Norwich Free Academy, was a Class Historian at Yale, editor "Yale Courant," had an oration stand on graduation, taught Hopkins Grammar School, studied chemistry at Sheffield Scientific School, studied a year in London hospitals; on returning to United States practiced at Florence, Massachusetts; West Woodstock and Woodstock Hill, Connecticut. He bought the old Paine farm at the north end of Woodstock Street in 1884, and lived there for ten years, when he was obliged on account of ill health to go to Pasadena, California. He joined the Woodstock Theft Detecting Society 1884; became trustee Woodstock Academy 1885; master 1887 Senexet Grange, of which he and his wife the previous year became charter members. In Pasadena, Dr. Gaylord was a 30th degree Scottish Rite Mason; was Master of his Lodge of Masons, and was Vestryman and Treasurer of all Saints Church, Pasadena, California.
