James Gayton was born 4 Nov 1840 in Shipdham, Norfolk, the son of Benjamin Bagge Gayton and Anne Eaglen. He was christened 6 Dec[1].
In 1841 he lived with his family at Black Moor Row, Shipdham[2]. In 1851 he lived with his family on the road to Letton Green, Shipdham. He was a farmer's boy[3]. In 1861 he may have been a lodger in East Winch, Norfolk, in the Brighton household[4].
James married Bertha Bennett on 6 Jan 1866 in West Bradenham[5][6][7][8].
On the 1871 Census he lived with Bertha at the Park Farm in Shipdham with daughter Harriett Bennett and sons William and Alfred[9]. In 1881 he lived at Bradenham Lane with daughters Harriett, Eliza and Victoria, and sons William and Frederick[10]. In 1891 they lived with WIlliam and Victoria[11]. He was a shepherd.
In 1901 the couple lived on Watton Road with Bertha's sister Harriet, a widow[12].
