Biography

Josephus Gazoli married Dorothea Wagner on 29 June 1851 in the parish of Detta (currently: Deta, Timis, Romania).[1] The couple had at least ten children, who all were born in Topolya and had various godparents:

  • Theresia (* 22 November 1852)[2] - Josephus Wegscheider (servus dominalis like Josephus himself) and Christina Kugler
  • Stephanus (* 16 August 1855)[3] - Nicolaus Fucko??? Anna Steischel???
  • Ottilia (* 10 August 1857)[4] - Maximilianus Kromer et Ottilia Wagner
  • Maria (* 21 March 1860)[5] - Joannes Sabo et Susanna Bab?
  • Susanna (* 1 February 1862)[6] - Joannes Sabo et Susanna Pap ambo vidui
  • Julia (* 26 May 1864)[7] - Joannes Szabo and Julianna/Susanna(??) Szabo
  • Bertha (* 8 September 1866)[8] - Joannes Sabo and Julianna Bencsik
  • Thekla (* 26 May 1868)[9]
  • Joannes (* 4 May 1870)[10] - Carolus Klement molitor, Carolina Prohaska
  • Eduardus (* 7 October 1873)[11] - Carolus Klement and Carolina Prohaska

Josephus died on 26 February 1892 in Topolya of Influenza and was buried there two days later. His occupation is rice miller (risz molinar),[12] just like his son in law Nicolaus Meszecsov, the second husband of his firstborn child Theresia.

Research notes

  • decipher marriage witnesses from original
  • decipher godparents and occupations properly

Birth year

At the wedding in 1851 his age can be read as 23, implying a calculated birth year around 1828. [1] The death record from 1892 can be either read as 70, 73 or 79,[12] leaving calculated birth years of 1822, 1819 and 1813, which all do not exactly fit the wedding age.

Origin

His death record refers to him as Olasz hon(os) meaning "Italian native", which is the only document statement about his origin.[12] The erroneous note about the death of his daughter Berta in Oravița might imply a connection to the Gazollis from there. With their ancestor Joseph Gazzoli their origin goes back to Resiutta in Italy. The might have been related, but since the name is quite spread in Italy, it will probably get very difficult.
