The 1881 census shows Catherine Jane is aged 7 and is a scholar. She has several siblings, both older and younger than herself. Her father appears to have left the railway or he may now be a machinist for the railway, what is more, likely he is working on machinery at the local Ironworks, unfortunately, no industry is given in relation to his being a machinist. Her mum Elizabeth continues to be a lacemaker, a highly skilled craft[2]
