Biography

Philip Gebhardt (AKA Georg Philip) was born in 1713, in the village of Desloch, in what is today Germany. He was a son of Peter Gebhardt (1680-1739) and Anna Eva Margaretha Schlarp (1680-1748). In some secondary sources, he is named as Johann George Philip, but no primary sources use Johann (or Johannes) for this person.

Baptism: 6 Feb 1713, Desloch, Zweibrücken

name: Georg Philipp
parents: Hans Peter & Anna Eva
sponsors: Georg Hoffman, Philipp Schlarpp (s/o Peter), Maria Elisabetha Bartholome

4 Feb 1736. He married Anna Margaretha Masse (1710-1783) at Meisenheim.[1] NOTE: the FamilySearch transcription says Meisenheim, Prussia. Rather, the location should be Meisenheim, Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate--which is right next to Desloch, the village of his birth.

9 Sep 1738. Arrival at the port of Philadelphia on the US on the ship Glasgow from Rotterdam, but last from Cowes in England. Walter Sterling, Commander. On the passenger list he is Phillip Gebhert. On the oath of allegiance list he is Philip Gibhert, age 26

19 Mar 1739. Land warrant signed.. "George Philipp Gaphart of Lancaster County hath requested to take up 100 acres of land adjoining Peter Hoyler on the Middle Creek in Tulpyhockin Township in Lancaster county. He agrees to pay the sum of 15 pounds, 10 shillings for the 100 acres. Authorized to survey unto Georg Philip the place aforesaid and make return into the Secretary's Office." Book A Vol 17 Page 57: A certain tract of land situate in Tulpyhoccon Township, Lancaster County containing 103 acres - which tract was surveyd by virtue of a warrant dated March 19, 1739 granted to George Philip Gebhart.

16 Sep 1750. Phillipp Gebhardt and wife Anna Magaretha sponsor the baptism of Anna Margaretha Ritscher, daughter of Johannes Ritscher.[2]

24 Sep 1755. Naturalized as a British citizen.

1790 US census shows Phil Gebhart living in Bethel Township, Berks, Pennsylvania.

He died about 1792 [but see discussion in his FindAGrave profile; he may have left a will that conflicts with this date].

4 Feb 1736: Philip Gebhartdt married Anna Margaretha Masse. Philip Gebhardt (1713-1792) and Anna Margaretha Masse (1710-1783) had the following children (some may be mis-attributed, or duplicated, pending further sourcing). Those marked with an asterisk (*) are recorded in the baptismal records of Rev John Caspar Stoever as children of Phillipp Gebhardt of Tulpehocken[3]. The four oldest children were born in New Holland, Earl Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The remaining younger children were born in Tulpehocken Township, Lancaster County [today" Berks], Pennsylvania. Many of their children later migrated to Miamisburg, Montgomery County, Ohio.

Research Notes

As noted on his FindAGrave memorial (and at his profile on FamilySearch) on a number of secondary sources (including FindAGrave), there has been conflation among 2 or perhaps 3 men named Gebhart, who were contemporaries in Pennsylvania. This profile pertains to a George Philip Gebhart who lived in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County (today: Bethel Township, Berks County). Many of his children were baptized at Altalaha Lutheran church in Rehrersburg.

He married Anna on February 4, 1736, in Meisenheim Germany. He and Anna arrived in Philadelphia, PA in the US on the ship Glasgow on September 9, 1738. He is listed in the 1790 Berks County Census as Phil Gebhart

Previously merged file had a birth date of 4 July 1713. Check sources.

From his FindAGrave memorial:

For what it is worth I have added this information sent to me on 11/13/15: "Many wills are now on line, and one is that of Philip Gebhart who died in 1792. It suddenly becomes clear that the Philip Gebhart who died in 1792 is NOT the one born 1712/13 in Germany. 1792 lists a wife Christine and seven children, none of whom have reached the age of majority. They are John Philip, Leonard, John, Eva, Catharina, Christina, and Daniel. I have found most of their baptisms online and am in the process of trying to unravel this family. It turns out there were at least three Philip Gebharts born in 1743, 1748, and 1750. I think the one born in 1750 was the son of the immigrant born in 1712/13 whose date of death I have not yet determined. The one born in 1748 was born in Swatara. All of which to say that when the records have been unraveled, the FAG memorials will have to be as well. Bummer. Sent by Ellen member #47172556"
