Biography

Alexander started his working life as a Fitter. He also joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (R.N.V.R Volunteer no. 32974). Towards the end of WW1 he joined the Royal Navy, signing up at Newcastle-on-Tyne, in June, 1918 and shipping at Devonport on the Vivid II . By the 8th of May, when he was demobilised, he had also served on the Dolphin and the Lucia. His record gives his appearance - his height was 5 foot, 4 and a quarter inches, eyes grey, nair dark brown and complexion sallow. The record also, for two different ships, gives his character as VG (very good) and his ability as Sat (Satisfactory).

After the War, in 1920, he went to Sumatra as an electrical engineer. It may be that he was invited out by his brother Andrew, who had already been there as a rubber planter for six years.
