Biography

John became a shipping clerk. John was named after his Aunt Margaret's Geddie-25 husband, a ships Captain who died young leaving no children. She named John as her Residuary Legatee in her will, to inherit her house in Elgin (after her sister Jessie's Geddie-27 death) also leaving him all her shares in the South African Milling Company [1] which was ore, not grain, milling. The house was "Norham" at 22 Reidhaven Street in Elgin, Moray.

John joined the Kaffrarian Rifles [2] and was active as a trooper in the Bechuanaland Campaign 24 December 1896 to 30 July 1897 for which he received the Cape of Good Hope Gnereal Service medal [3] and he then went on to fight in the second Boer War, during one point of which he was captured by the Boers at Jammersberg Drift (his Queens South Africa Medal had the clasp Wepener) and was going to be taken to Pretoria as reported in the London Evening Standard 24 April 1900 [4] However, he was able to resume his service with the Kaffrarian Rifles and was promoted to Sergeant by the end of the Boer War.

John and Henrietta's memorial stone was put up by their daughter-in-law Margaret [Dickson-4037]] wife of John Winchester Geddie, Jnr. and included her husband as well. [5]
