Hy was 'n onderwyser by plaasskooltjies in die omgewing. // Hesther was in Ermelo for high school eduacation. After that she got her training as a teacher in Heidelberg. She taught in Potchefstroom, where her parents lived after their retirement. She had her own car, which was exceptional for the family, with which she took her parents to places and also gave transportation to siblings. She married Johan du Preez on her birthday, when she was 37 years old. He was a teacher at farm schools in the area. When the farm schools were centralized, he further taught at the Swartruggens Central School, a primary school. In Swartruggens they built their own house, close to the Reformed Church, where they were members and had a strong involvement. Johan was scribe for a long time and he was also a song leader in the time when the congregation did not yet have an organ. After his retirement from teaching, they moved to Potgietersrus - their daughter Betsie and son Herman lived there with their families at the time. A few months after the move, Hesther died there and was buried at Swartruggens.
