Hans Joachim Gehrls was born on June 22, 1814, in Gadebusch, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, his father, Joachim, was 33 and his mother, Catharina, was 29. He married Anna Catharina Cords and they had one daughter together. He then married Marie Elisabeth Dorothea Schapert and they had three children together. He had one brother and one sister.
