Biography
James was born in 1843, the son of Thomas Gentles and Jessie Lawrie. [From Death Reg.]
On 1 March 1871 at All Saints, Geelong, Victoria, he married Ann (Mackie) Beard (1834-1900). [1]

- GENTLES—BEARD.—On the 1st inst., at All Saints' Church, Geelong, by the Rev. George Goodman, James Lawrie Gentles, late of Jedburgh, Scotland, to Anne, widow of George Chantler Beard, B.A., of Riccarton, New Zealand, and daughter of the Rev. Chas. Mackie M.A., late of Avonside, Canterbury, New Zealand. [2] [Jedburgh is abour 47 mile S.E. of Edinburgh.]
