Biography

LEWIS P. GENTRY (#417) Source: Heritage of Putnam Co. Tn – 2008 by Putnam Co. Heritage Book Committee and Co. Heritage Inc. Pg. 140:

Lewis P. Gentry was born Dec. 4, 1837 in White Co. Tn, the son of William H. and Lucinda (Conway) Gentry. Lewis was married to Martha Washington Buck on Feb. 22, 1859. Martha was born Nov. 3, 1836 in Jackson Co. Tn. the daughter of Abraham and Margaret (Simmerley) Buck. Lewis died Apr. 6, 1916, and Martha died Mar. 1, 1919. They are buried in the Gentry Cemetery, south of Cookeville with many of their family.

All of their thirteen children were born in Putnam Co. Tn. These children were:

William Stanton (b. Mar. 3, 1860, d. Mar. 8, 1937) m. Oct. 12, 1882 to Martha McCaleb; Thomas Merdith "Bud" (b. 18 Nov 1861, d. 17 Mar. 1943) m. Jan. 16, 1886 to Rhoda Sparks; Mary F. (b. Apr. 28, 1863, d. Mar. 26, 1929) m. Nuton Bussell; Laura W. (b. Mar. 12, 1865, d. Oct. 12, 1908), m. William Thomas Clouse; Margaret "Maggie: (b. Aug. 11, 1867, d. August 26, 1923) was m. to W. L. Fate Bray; Mansfield M., b. Oct. 12, 1869, d. May 3, 1879; Robert Abraham "Bob" (b. Oct. 6, 1871, d. Apr. 25, 1955) m. Mar. 23, 1909 to Sallie Massa. James was b. and d. 26 Apr. 1873. Jefferson Franklin "Jeff" (b. May 26, 1875, d. Feb. 16, 1955) m. May 6, 1900 to Lois Z. Edwards; Lewis Alfred (b. Mar. 26 1877, d. July 8, 1953) never married; Martha E. "Liza" (b. Oct. 27, 1879, d. Apr. 24, 1895) m. David Patton; John L. (b. Nov. 21, 1884, d. Sept. 1969 is buried in Fl.) m. Mary Ann Chism and Mona Massa; Newton Richard (b. Nov. 24, 1882, d. Jan. 9, 1958) m. ca. 1907 to Eliza Judd. Story submitted by Bettie Stark.
