Biography

Laura Jane George was born on 21 January 1844 at Bernard Creek in the county of Wharton in Texas. She was the daughter of Ezekial George (1816-1865) of Tennessee and Martha Amanda Winfree (1826-1847) of North Carolina. She had a sister, Martha A. (1846-??), and a brother, Charles Robert (1847-1938). Her family was living in Wharton county in 1850.^[1] Laura's mother died the same year that her brother was born in 1847. Her father, Ezekiel, married a woman named Elizabeth, born about 1836 in England and his family is recorded twice in the 1860 US Census. On 9 June 1860, the family of nine was living in Wharton county.^[2] On 20 July 1860, the same family was living in Washington county, Texas.^[3] The birth dates of the children indicate that Ezekiel had children, and was probably married after his first wife died. His FS profile shows three subsequent marriages and six more children. Caroline Davis 1847, Elizabeth Laws 1854 and Louisa Petty in 1863. Ezekiel died in 1865. Laura was living with, and possibly working for, a lawyer named Fred Barnard and his family in 1870.^[4]

She first married a Johnson about 1864 and they had a son, George Sidney Johnson (1865-??). She second married Henry Lee Borden 3 Mar 1873 in Colorado county, Texas. H.L.'s household was comprised of Laura, Sidney, and Laura's sister-in-law, Mary George.^[5] Laura sued H.L. for divorce on grounds of desertion in about 1884. She third married John B. Newman on 27 Oct 1887 in Elgin, Kane, Illinois. She was living in the household of John and his two sons, Paul and William in Elgin in 1900^[6] and in 1910.^[7] Laura and John Newman were still living in Elgin in 1920.^[8]

She died on 27 October 1921 in Elgin of Kane county in Illinois.^[9] Her body was buried at the Bluff Cemetery in Elgin.^[10]
