Biography

Isaac West George, 1851-1889, was born in Knox, Illinois, the son of Malita McDonald and Ellis George. He married Victoria Elwood on 3 November 1878 in Butler County, Nebraska. [1]

In 1860, Isaac was 10, living with his parents and siblings in Chestnut Township, Knox, Illinois. [2]

In 1885, Isaac George, 32, born in Illinois, a grain merchant; and his wife, Victoria, 24, born in Iowa, lived in Garfield, Lancaster, Nebraska. Living nearby was (Isaac’s brother) Pleasant George, his wife Nannie, and their four Children. [3]

On 27 February 1886, Isaac’s sister, Lorena George was drowned in a buggy accident on the Salt River (Lancaster Co., Nebraska). She was driving the rig, on her way to her uncle Isaac George’s house (probably her brother), when she lost control, and was plunged in to the river along with the horse and buggy. Her body was not immediately recovered. [4]

Isaac George died as the result of a terrible accident which occurred on 13 December 1889 in Crabb’s Mill, which he had recently leased. Crabb’s Mill was a hydro-powered grain mill in Lincoln, Nebraska, on Salt Creek, a tributary of the Platte River. On Friday 13 December 1889, he was inside the mill repairing some equipment when his leg was caught in a pulley. His leg was horribly mangled, severed below the knee, and the skin was stripped off to the hip and groin. Doctors were called to the scene. His leg was amputated. Isaac George was returned to his home, and was not expected to survive. Stories of the accident were printed in area newspapers until at least 21 December, but his actual date of death is not known. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10]

Isaac W. George, 1851-1889, aged 37-38, is buried at Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebraska. Among his family buried there is is wife, Victoria Elwood (1859-1938), along with her second husband, Jacob Hazelton. [11] Note: FindAGrave shows his death date in error as 14 Dec. 1889. He was reported as still living after his mill accident as late as 21 Dec. 1889. His gravestone shows only that he died in the year 1889. [12]
