Winona Gephart was born 10 August 1911 in Miami Co., Ohio. She is the daughter of to Devoe Gebhart and Mary Griner.
In July 1914, her father was sentenced to the workhouse and her mother was sentenced to 83 days in the county jail for failure to provide. She and her siblings were sentenced to the jail as juveniles. Her brother, Daniel, remained with her mother in the jail. He and her other siblings were sent to the Miami County Childrens Home after 3 days.[1]
Prior to that, the family was living in a tent along the canal south of Piqua and New Castle, Henry Co., Indiana. In December 1914, she was taken out on trial by Mr and Mrs Henry Rice of Sidney, Ohio. She was adopted in February 1918 and her name was changed to Peggy Caroline Rice.[2]

She married John C Lewis 23 January 1938 in Sistersville, West Virginia.[5]

She died 18 January 1997 in Allen, Ohio. [7][8]She is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery and Mausoleum in Lima, Ohio.[9]

Peggy Caroline Lewis, age eighty-five of Waynesfield, died Saturday, January 18, 1997 at 10:25 p.m. at the Lima Memorial Hospital.
She was born on August 14, 1911 in Sidney, the daughter of Harry L. and Willa (Hickock) Rice. On January 23, 1938, she married John Clifford Lewis who passed away on June 10, 1967.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Willa Jean Lewis Braden (husband Ronnie Braden) of Enterprise, Alabama; Susan L. Lewis of Deltona, Florida; and Barbara J. Lewis Young (husband: Gary Young) of Waynesfield; two step-sons: Leonard Kelveder and James Kelveder, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, William Clifford Lewis and two step-sons: Richard Merrel Lewis and Harrold Duane Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker.
Funeral services will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Lewis Memorial Chapel of Chiles & Sons in Laman, Lima, Ohio. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lima, Ohio. Friends may call from two to four and six to eight on January 21, 1997 at the funeral home.
